The Girl in Trance Series is a metaphor of my childhood. My twin sister and I closed ourselves out to the world into one where socialization or communication were not necessary, we were shy and introverted, and our thoughts and actions were synchronized. Although the character in this piece is not a twin, she represents that childhood trance-like experience. A child’s sense of being is still abstract; it lacks the social structures and awareness that develop toward adulthood. I try to convey the nostalgia and strangeness of childhood perception in my work.
