In my childhood, I had a fascination with taking things apart and attempting to put them back together. I would investigate the inner workings of radios, cameras, clocks and other contraptions with a curiosity of what held them together. Once reassembled they never worked the same again. Printmaking, as a medium, holds that same interest for me. I enjoy the process of observing my surroundings and taking them apart layer by layer. I build and rebuild the image in attempt to make sense of it formally and conceptually. Abstraction, for me, is a process of distilling the essence of my observable environment to the essential. In my work, I explore how much I can take out without the image falling apart.
For this series of work, "Forms", I reference that process of visual forms in decay as metaphor of loss and renewal. These prints act as fragments of how objects in situ can be both neglected and beautiful all at once. |
