The Fitting Room charcoal on paper POR The Fitting Room is a fantasy portrait of a real-live Guerilla Girl named Julia Child. The Guerrilla Girls came to our campus to give a performance and a workshop. They were all very strong and creative. When I drew Julia after the workshop, I wanted to emphasize the Guerrilla Girls’ strength and spirit, so I added the broken metal bra. To me, the broken parts don’t represent brokenness. They are more like battle scars on a fierce warrior. |

Administrative Oni charcoal on paper POR When I drew this, I was very interested in Japanese folklore and fairy tales. There are creatures in those stories called oni, who are something like what we in the West would call ogres. The oni aren’t
very smart and are easily fooled, so even though they behave like
bullies, one can usually manage to get away from them if one uses her
head. This is a drawing of some fun I had imagining how the leaders of
some hierarchies would look if their oni side was showing. |
