James Herrmann has always been fascinated by prehistoric creatures.  When he creates sculptures of these extinct creatures he first studies available fossils of the organism and then observes their closest living relatives.   A sculpture is then created  from clay that takes what we know from research and what we can infer to create artwork that shows how these animals might have looked and behaved one day a long, long time ago.  “Mesozoic Ammonites” and “Isoteleus maximus trilobite” are two examples of  this approach.

James also has always loved mythology, science fiction and fantasy and has always loved sculpting the life found there.  Creating artwork  based entirely upon your imagination is very liberating although he still strives for believability.  Research into the anatomy and movement of living animals is again very helpful to achieve this believability.
