Most of my current work is concerned with climate change and endangered species. I recently completed a series of mixed technique prints about mangrove forests, called “Mangroves on the Edge.” Mangroves are “on the edge” in more than one sense. They grow on the edge between land and sea, forming a protective barrier and habitat for all kinds of life. They are also on the edge of survival, threatened both by human development and by climate change. These prints combine solar plate etching, dry point, and ink drawing. The solar plates are made in various ways, drawings on acetate, digital photographs, or direct exposure of leaves or other objects. Each print is made from several plates that are combined and cut to shape for specific prints; hand drawing is added to expand the reach of the plates and to tie them together, so that no two prints are identical. |
