The New Dutch Vanitas: Helio relief and hand engraved woodcut, photopolymer relief and intaglio with chine collé on bamboo paper This new work, part of recent suite of prints and entitled, ‘The New Dutch Vanitas’, is the result of channeling diverse experiences during a 2015-16 sabbatical and residency at Amsterdam’s Grafisch Atelier Lab in the Netherlands. Juxtaposing personal, photographic imagery and appropriated subjects culled from various online sources, this work fuses interpretations of vanitas and memento mori prevalent within the history of Dutch art. As an artist who explores the print hybrid: a combination of traditional techniques (woodcut and chine collé) and modern processes (helio-relief and photopolymer gravure), I revel in synthesizing past and present technologies employed within the history of printmaking practice.
