Introduced to ceramics in high school in Australia, Dan later apprenticed with a painter/sculptor in Bangalore, India while pursuing his undergraduate degree in comparative religion, anthropology, and languages. With subsequent experiences studying ceramics in Japan and Jerusalem, he worked in a ceramics studio while studying at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. He continued to make and instruct in ceramics while pursuing a PhD in French & Arabic literature at UC Berkeley. He then taught Arabic in Ithaca, NY alongside teaching classes in the Cornell University Pottery Studio and taking sculpture courses at the Cornell Foundry. In 2007 he started an 18-month residency at the Cub Creek Foundation in Virginia, followed by 3 years as Chris Gustin’s studio manager. Dan followed up his fall 2011 residency at Watershed with residencies in Denmark, France, Québec City and Brooklyn.
