Designs from Midwest scenery inspire me: pasture fields, historic architecture, thunderstorms, plants, and fabric patterns. I choose to carve fine designs into the clay to mimic the delicacy of porcelain yet I also choose to keep trimming and throwing lines, giving rough handmade properties to the pot to ensure that it maintains the mark of the potter. I appreciate the contrast of the fine, delicate designs and lusters on porcelain with trimming marks, dents, and fingerprints making each piece of pottery feel alive, as if it has its own, imperfect soul.
