My love of the human figure, a genre with a 40,000-year-old tradition, is the impetus for my earthenware sculpture. Concentrating in the bas-relief to hang on the wall, I work from the live model, rendering no two pieces alike in form or content. The sensuous curves of the reclining female nude offer endless possibilities for both composition and ideation. While the model inspires the figure’s gesture, the background narrative is invented. Beginning with a slab of clay, additive and subtractive methods of sculpting are employed. Textured and stained, it is fired in an electric oxidation kiln to Cone 04.
