Sarah and Angelia Grimke grew up on a plantation in South Carolina. Their father believed in slavery and the subordination of women. In violation of the law Sarah taught her personal slave how to read. In 1836 they became the first female public speakers in the United States. In response for their radical views the sisters were cast out of their Quaker church.
