My work primarily revolves around large architectural forms that are derived from traditional vessel. Traditional pottery plays a large role in the aesthetics of each piece. Vessels are slab and wheel formed using low fire clay, fired in an electric kiln and glazed using low fire glazes. In addition, geometric shapes intrigue me. Their simple design and precise edges create a repeatable cohesive visual element. The geometric shapes are hand formed, fired and glazed in the same method. Vessels are swarmed or fused with groups or clusters of smaller geometric shapes. My intention is to combine contrasting shapes, colors and use tenuous balance to create animated forms. Geometric shapes move in and out of these vessels and are often trapped or rest inside the larger forms. Most recently I have become intrigued by the activity inside vessels. In traditional pottery you craft the inside as well as the outside of the pot. I am examining the possibility of the vessel’s contents becoming the most powerful visual element. The interiors of these large vessels often become a stage for gathering shapes and containing movement. The interior in some pieces also serves as a platform where shapes move or transition through the walls.
