In my sculpture I aim to expose the trials and tribulation in life that make us human, while on a never ending journey to satisfy our own idea of personal perfection. I also want to show the things that keep us together, whether it be nature, a helping hand, or pure perseverance.
By using black and white, strong figures and classical basses, I have been experimenting with imagery that looks back on the Roman and Greek ideas of perfection and how that can fit into our own definition. With heavy weight and tension representing the pressures that can break us down, the crumbling body parts are created by building, then destroying: along with constant experimentation. This constant experiment is vindictive of what it is to be human and learn from ones own existence. I have named these pieces Self Portrait I, II… This title is meant to be a little ironic and brings to light the idea that we are all broken at times.
When people see my work I hope they not only see the strain it takes for the figures to be in existence, but most importantly, that they exist. |
