My work explores themes of the psychology of self and how place informs identity. I explore the premise that the cultural atmosphere influences social roles and gender identity. The teapot references the architecture of home and the nourishment of domestic pottery as well as walking the line of gender roles in the American West. Being a Wyoming native, I notice that gender roles are a highly defined aspect of the culture. My teapots speak of the duality between self and place, our humanity and our home. I notice that domesticity invites a clear distinction between gender roles. I find the dualistic categories of gender to be too limiting in their definitions of the ambiguous nature of identity and place. This idea of two separate identities is exploited in my work and how this relates to the home and self. .
