The title comes from a song by Bob Dylan, and the sculpture is part of my series about housing issues and the effects of the recession. I’ve used animals to represent people in several sculptures, especially the monkey. The sculpture is coil built in sections, and once fired with terra sigillata, slip, glaze and oxides.
My work focuses on the relationship between people and their environment. Narrative and textural, it is inspired by ancient art, travel, mythology, stone carvings, Etruscan ceramics, contemporary events and abstract expressionism.
I am interested in portraying archetypal situations that can be used to explore modern life. My ceramic and mixed media sculpture uses humor, texture and color to comment upon our search for meaning, and our connection to our homes, our environment and other people.
The meticulous textures, formed by pinching, coiling, stretching, stacking and carving the clay, act to draw viewers in. Like messengers from an ancient tale, the sculptures beckon us to come closer, and to decipher their story.
