Dennis Spicer, of Linden, CA, graduated from California College of Arts and Crafts in 1989 with a MFA in Painting and Drawing with Distinction. He works in a variety of mediums in addition to ceramics, including animation for Walt Disney Feature Films, and his art is in private collections worldwide. Artist Statement: This butter dish is one of seven designs coordinated as production pieces and utilizes a number of paper patterns created by the artist to form the various sculptural elements. Using slump molds and hand-building techniques, the artist has captured the delicacy and beauty of both hummingbird and flower. Specialized apparatuses were employed to suspend the hollow elements as they were drying in place; these elements were hand painted with underglazes during the greenware stage prior to the first firing. Form and function are at play here, and illustrate a surprising contrast between utilitarian and decorative art.
