Pretty Abyss shows my interest in the interaction of the two kinds of sign that are text and visual images. My technical working method is to prepare digitally composed images and text, but then through projection, hand-transcribe them onto the pot, so that ultimately the surface has a warmer feel than a decal or mechanical process. To me, this is analogous to the way we move through the world, taking things that are objectively outside us and through use, making them more personal. I’m looking for concepts that are forthright and evocative at the same time: “loud and vague,” as I like to think of it.
