Dr. Lisa Cooper Wilkins awarded
NAACP Medgar Evers Freedom Fighter Award

Dr. Lisa Cooper Wilkins receives NAACP Medgar Evers Freedom Fighter Award for 2017

(Stockton, CA) Congratulations to Dr. Lisa Cooper Wilkins, Delta’s Assistant Superintendent/ Vice President of Student Services. Dr. Cooper Wilkins was presented with the Medgar Evers Freedom Fighter Award at the NAACP Stockton Branch, Freedom Fund Banquet, November 18, at the Brookside Country Club, Stockton.

The Freedom Fighter awards memorialize the late civil rights activist, Medgar Wiley Evers, who worked to overturn segregation at the University of Mississippi, and fought for social justice and voting rights for African Americans. The award recognizes individuals who are contributors to positive change in their communities, and work to make the quality of life better for the country as a whole.

Dr. Cooper Wilkins is flattered to be one of four Freedom Fighter Award recipients for 2017. Other winners: Dr. Ines Ruiz-Huston; Bishop Rufus Turner, and Lady Trena Turner.

“I was honored and humbled to receive the Medgar Evers Freedom Fighter Award from the Stockton Branch of the NAACP,” said Dr. Cooper Wilkins. “The theme of this year’s banquet was ‘steadfast and immovable,’ which embodies the work the organization and its members have engaged in on behalf of the community for many years. I thank Mr. & Mrs. Bivens for their impressive leadership.”

When accepting the award, Dr. Cooper Wilkins shared the African principle of Ubuntu. Ubuntu expresses a philosophy of humanity and has been translated as: I am because you are.

“I shared this because even though I was receiving an award that reflected an ‘appreciation of my community leadership and service for the betterment of civil rights,’ I know that I have not accomplished anything without the support and partnership of many – including individuals and organizations represented in the room that evening.”

Cooper Wilkins emphasizes that she’sespecially thankful during the holiday season that she works with Delta College’s dedicated faculty and staff. “My colleagues are steadfastly focused on the success of our students – helping them to transform their lives and realize their dreams.”

Dr. Cooper Wilkins finishes with this proverb: ”If you want to go fast – go alone; if you want to go far – go together."
