Delta College Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month! |
(Stockton, CA) Delta College is proud to announce the Hispanic Heritage Month Program for 2017! Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated September 15 – October 15, and will offer entertaining and educational special events open to the public.
Faculty and staff are excited about this year’s events. “Hispanic Heritage Month provides Delta an opportunity to celebrate Latino students across our campus,” says Sarah Seekatz, Professor of Mexican American History. “I look forward to seeing our students at the exciting events we have planned this year.”
Professor Vicki Marie and the Cultural Awareness Program begin the celebrations a day early with a Steel Pan Drum performance by Shawn Thwaites on Thursday, September 14 at 11:30am in the Quad/President’s Patio. This FREE event is open to the public and will also feature a Trinidad Culture Presentation.
You’re invited to join Delta students, staff, and faculty for the Hispanic Heritage Month Kick Off on Friday, September 15, 12 noon in front of Goleman Library. Wear a t-shirt, jersey, or traditional attire from a Latin American Country. Attendees may also drop by our selfie station for a photo with Fierce the Mustang.
The popular Ballet Folklorico de Frank Zapata will perform at Delta’s Atherton Auditorium, September 15 at 7 p.m. This La Raza Employees Association scholarship fundraiser features guests Adan Zuniga and Grupo Folklorico Calli. Tickets are $15 - $25, and available at the Delta College Box Office, (209) 954-5110, or online, https://dca.deltacollege.edu.
On October 5, join Professor Sarah Seekatz in Atherton Auditorium, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., for a FREE lecture on Latinos in the Gold Rush. Hear the untold stories – from Mexican Miners to Chilean Bandits – from our own backyard! The public welcome!
Throughout the month Delta’s Goleman Library will highlight materials pertaining to Latino culture. Additionally, you’re invited to explore exhibits in the Horton administration building focusing on Latino culture and Dia de Los Muertos.
Hispanic Heritage Month also highlights club opportunities open to all Delta College students. The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers meets Wednesdays (Sept. 27, Oct. 11) from 4 – 5:30 p.m., and Thursdays (Sept. 28, Oct. 12) from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Holt 130. The Latino Medical Student Association welcomes all students interested in the medical field. They meet Fridays at 1:30 p.m. in Science and Math 311. For updates please text @latinomed to 81010.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the Puente Program. The Puente Learning Community is a part of a state-wide program that supports students in their academic and career goals by providing mentoring, counseling, and courses that explore Latino culture. Interested in joining or supporting the Puente Learning Community? Please visit their website: https://www.deltacollege.edu/dept/puente/
As a Hispanic Serving Institution, Delta College strives to support its students of Hispanic descent. As such, Superintendent/President, Dr. Kathy Hart and a campus leadership team representing student services, instruction, and administration, and two Puente student ambassadors, will attend the Hispanic Association of Colleges and University's annual conference in San Diego this October.
Hispanic Heritage Month ends on October 15, but celebrations continue at Delta. The La Raza Employees Association will host the Dia de Los Muertos Breakfast and Art Show Scholarship Fundraiser on Friday, November 1.
