Dr. Lisa Cooper Wilkins attends inaugural |
Dr. Lisa Cooper Wilkins, Delta College’s Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Student Services, was selected from a competitive field of candidates to participate in the inaugural Administration 201: Transformational Leadership Program, a new summer academy of the Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA). The program took place July 23-27, at Sierra College in Rocklin, CA.
Dr. Cooper Wilkins is one of 37 participants in this first-ever innovative seminar. The ACCCA has declared these individuals as “future leaders” who will ultimately be called upon to implement the pioneering changes necessary to improve student success.
Administration 201 is the latest in a series of successful training events by the ACCCA. The seminar is intended to bridge the gap between skills and leadership development in the California Community Colleges system.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the ACCCA's Admin 201 leadership program” said Dr. Wilkins. “It was exciting to have California Community Colleges Chancellor, Eloy Oakley, as one of our featured speakers. He spoke passionately about his commitment to California students being better prepared to enter the workforce.”
The Association of California Community College Administrators has a 40+ year history of providing cutting edge training and professional development to the administrators in the California Community Colleges system. The program’s compelling curriculum pairs a comprehensive exploration of leadership theory and self-assessment with strategies for implementing institutional change.
“I am especially grateful to Superintendent/President Dr. Kathy Hart for her willingness to support my participation in this unique professional development,” added Dr. Cooper Wilkins. “I discovered more about my own leadership skills, and had the unique opportunity to network with impressive leaders throughout the California community college system.”
During that same week, Delta College administrators Ed Aguilar, John Ervin, Laura Ochoa-Sanchez, Shayla Walker and Shelly Valenton, attended the ACCCA’s Administration 101 program, at Brandman University in Irvine, CA. The five-day seminar focused on “nuts and bolts” management basics for California’s unique community college system. Overviews and case studies by seasoned practitioners on crucial technical, regulatory, and legal aspects of community college administration were designed to help attendees apply this knowledge to real-world situations.
Laura Ochoa-Sanchez, Dean of Agriculture, Science and Mathematics, feels the program helped provide a foundation to be an effective administrator and leader. “The speakers were excellent. In addition, I networked with other community college administrators and learned what Delta could apply from their support programs. I highly recommend Admin 101 to any administrator in the California Community Colleges system!”
