For Immediate Release Delta College hosts Stockton is Magnificent (Stockton, CA) Twenty-four performing acts, 135 participant booths, nine food trucks, and the traditional enormous group photo are only part of the allure of the 5th Stockton is Magnificent celebration, April 2, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at San Joaquin Delta College. Superintendent/President Kathy Hart jumped at the chance to host this year’s event. “Delta College is a valuable educational, cultural and economic engine of the community.” Hart says hosting Stockton is Magnificent (SIM) is a tremendous open house opportunity for the college to showcase its programs. “Attendees will see our beautiful campus, including Delta’s new Measure L funded instructional centers and renovations.” Hart has attended every SIM and is constantly impressed by the community spirit. “The wealth of talent and civic pride displayed each year by Stockton residents proves that Stockton is indeed magnificent!”Stockton is Magnificent president Denise Jefferson has spearheaded the all-volunteer event since its inception. Jefferson was born in Stockton, has moved away several times, but always comes back. “I always came back because Stockton is a magnificent city and a great place to live. We have access to everything we need here…we just need to learn to appreciate it.” As former Director of the Miracle Mile, Jefferson says the seeds for the celebration were planted by Forbes Magazine’s declarations that “Stockton is the most miserable city in the United States.” Jefferson recounts, “One merchant suggested we ‘fight back’ by throwing a community party to prove Forbes got it wrong. Over a few beers at Valley Brew, we came up with the name.” Thus, Stockton is Magnificent was born. Six weeks later, the first event took place at the Miracle Mile, April 23, 2011. A local activist once told Denise Jefferson she was wasting her time and energy throwing parties. “Why not do some good with your money for the city,” chided the activist. After some reflection, Jefferson replied, “A negative image of our city cannot be changed from the outside world unless we change the negative perception by the citizens themselves. They need to learn to love this city.” Jefferson finished, “My goal is that Stockton is Magnificent will inspire attendees to volunteer and take pride in all this great community has to offer.” Jack Saunders is a key member of the Stockton is Magnificent planning team. Saunders started his career as an adjunct counselor at Delta in the 80’s, and is currently the college’s articulation officer, negotiating transfer agreements with other colleges and universities. A lifelong valley resident, he remembers Stockton’s downtown of the 50’s and early 60’s. “Buildings were still maintained and quite attractive.” Saunders emphasizes that growth and revitalization comes from recognizing and celebrating what is good about a place. “I came to realize that Stockton is Magnificent shares the same vision I have: Stockton is a vibrant cultural and commercial recreation center that is appreciated and held in esteem by its residents. By showcasing our camaraderie, non-profits, history, and the many jewels in our midst, Stockton is Magnificent is a clear voice for what is positive in Stockton.” With Delta College as 2016’s featured player, the event will salute five students or alumni who are Unsung Heroes. These local heroes will have promoted “a positive image of Stockton through volunteerism or their tireless deeds.” Delta College also wants to reconnect with alumni by hosting a special Alumni Booth at this year’s event. Cynthia Downs wanted to make sure she was understood. “We have never been disappointed. Stockton is Magnificent!” ### |
