For Immediate Release Northern California Society for Microscopy (Stockton, CA) The Northern California Society for Microscopy (NCSM) will hold their annual spring meeting at San Joaquin Delta College on Thursday, April 21. The program will start at 3 p.m. at Delta’s Center for Microscopy and Allied Sciences. An electron microscope is a special type of microscope used to look at things regular light microscopes cannot. Some electron microscopes can magnify an object several million times. Put simply, an Electron Microscopist prepares samples to be looked at in an electron microscope and then uses the microscope to view the sample. Microscopists work with research scientists in laboratories, manufacturer's application labs, or in sales and marketing. Delta College Electron Microscopy professor Jon Krupp says Delta is an ideal choice for the annual NCSM meeting. “There are excellent careers in Electron Microscopy. The NCSM is an affiliate society of the Microscopy Society of America. Its purpose is to increase, disseminate, and promote interchange of knowledge of microscopy and its applications.” Afternoon activities will include scientific presentations, vendor demonstrations, and tours of the building’s labs, including specimen preparation areas and electron microscopes. A buffet dinner catered by the Delta Culinary Arts program will be served in Danner Hall at 6 p.m. After dinner, there will be a presentation by one of this year’s Microscopy Society of America (MSA) tour speakers, Dr. C. Barry Carter of the University of Connecticut, Storrs. Dr. Carter is a world renowned Electron Microscopist. He served as MSA President in 1997, and is the current vice-president and past president of the International Federation of Societies for Microscopy. Dr. Carter will present “The future of the Transmission Electron Microscope and why we must remember the past.” The afternoon and evening sessions are free. However, to manage meal planning, anyone wishing to enjoy the evening dinner must RSVP by April 11. Information on NCSM membership and how to RSVP for the event are available at www.ncsmicroscopy.org. The spring meeting will also serve as an Open House for Delta’s Electron Microscope Training Program, the only one of its kind in the world. Established in 1970, Delta’s program has been in continuous operation training students for “In demand” careers in science and all forms of microscopy. Graduates have successfully joined the workforce as electron microscope technicians, service engineers, sales, and customer service representatives. They work in diverse fields from the semiconductor industry to biological research labs. NCSM President Roseann Csencsits, says “Over the last three decades, I’ve worked with over a dozen graduates of the Delta program in various capacities. I have found them to be well versed in microscopy as well as conscientious critical thinkers. It’s an outstanding program!” Daily parking permits ($2) are available from vending machines in Delta’s lots. Complimentary permits will also be available at the event registration table.
