Horton Gallery Exhibition: Social Constructs, Oct. 6 - 28

(Stockton, CA) Located on the campus of San Joaquin Delta College, the Delta Center for the Arts
L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery presents Social Constructs, an exhibition on identity and perception,
October 6 – 28, 2016.  The opening reception is planned for Thursday, October 6, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Admission to the Gallery is FREE and open to the public!

The Social Constructs art exhibition and accompanying drama performance, Meena’s Dream, question common social and cultural identity assumptions. Themes include race, gender, nationality, socioeconomic status, and a shifting reality of what it means to live “The American Dream.” Artists’ works explore topics from their personal cultural heritage, and how socially constructed “realities” have shaped and often misinformed our perspective of the represented cultural groups. Other topics address global concerns such as the lack of affordable housing, health care, climate change, gun violence, and immigration.

Gallery visitors are asked to please bring a donation of canned food for the food bank.

Meena's Dream, Oct. 27, Tillie Lewis Theater, 11am & 7:30p, Tix $4 - $9

Solo actress Anu Yadav performs a tale of nine year-old Meena who wishes her mother had the medicine she cannot afford. By night, Hindu God Lord Krishna begs her to battle the ‘Worry Machine’ to save the universe from destruction.  Alternating between imagination and reality, Meena must face her deepest fears, and keep dreaming of a world where everyone has enough.

As Meena gathers the courage to face the Worry Machine, she is also gathering courage to fight society’s messages that tell her she and her family don’t matter, there isn’t enough for them, that they are all alone. To Anu, those messages are part of the deceptive power of the Worry Machine all of us face about our individual self-worth, and our human rights to the basic needs of life. There is enough housing that remains empty, medicine and food that gets thrown away. Meena's Dream creates a fantastical world through storytelling and an original musical score of South Indian classical traditions, jazz, and indie folk.

Anu Yadav is a critically acclaimed actress, writer and theater-based educator dedicated to telling the stories of people pushed to the margins of public discourse. Her devised theater work sparks a powerful forum for people to reflect and listen to each other’s stories across social and economic divides.
