Release Empowering Positive Initiatives for Change (EPIC)
(Stockton, CA) Delta College will host the Empowering Positive Initiatives for Change (EPIC) and Asian Pacific Islander American Staff Association (APIASA) Student Leadership and Cultural Awareness Conference, Saturday, October 22, at Delta’s Science and Mathematics Building, 5151 Pacific Avenue, Stockton. The conference is geared for high school and Delta College Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) students. Activities and workshops will take place from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Conference keynote speakers are Fong Tran, Spoken Word Poet and Director of Student Activities at the College of Alameda; Dillon Delvo, Executive Director of the Little Manila Foundation, and Clarence Louie, EOPS Counselor/Professor Emeritus, Delta College. Workshops feature: Filipino American History & Hip Hop; the Southeast Asian American Experience; preparation and admission to higher education institutions in the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems. Also included will be presentations on financial aid resources, and two-year Career Technical Education (CTE) programs that lead directly to employment and good paying jobs. A civic engagement panel empowering students to take action will feature millennial leaders Cirian Villavicencio, Delta College Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Statewide Commission on Asian Pacific Affairs; Lange Luntao, Harvard graduate, Early College Educator at Aspire Langston Hughes Academy and candidate for SUSD school board; Chiakis Xiong-Ornelas, Delta/UC Berkeley graduate and Senior Constituent Representative for Congressman Jerry McNerney; Serey Vann, Delta/Sacramento State graduate and Student Programs Specialist in the Counseling Center at Delta College; and Tina Dang, a Delta/Sacramento State graduate and Adjunct Counselor/Professor, Los Rios Community College District and Doctoral Candidate in the Ed.D Program at the University of the Pacific.
