Delta College Choral Ensembles Present: |
(Stockton, CA) The San Joaquin Delta College Choirs and Guitar Ensemble present Fiesta Barroca: A celebration of music from the Mexican Baroque and California Mission eras, Tuesday, December 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Atherton Auditorium. This entertaining concert program will feature chant to dance music from the 16th century, to present day with works by Sumaya, Padilla, Franco, Zespedes, Sancho, Fernandez, and more!
The program opens with the earliest known polyphonic music to come from the new world, Hanacpachap Cussicuinin. The song comes from Peru and captures the essence of the indigenous influences upon western musical traditions. Throughout the concert, the listener will hear both traditional western European musical styles and music that has been influenced by various native cultures.
The Delta Guitar Ensemble will present Spanish and Brazilian styles by Kindle and Granados. Delta students will be featured on solo cantatas, with numerous student soloists appearing throughout the program. The concert closes with the rousing Villancico, Convidando esta la Noche, by Mexican born composer, Juan Garcia de Zespedes (1619-1678).
