(Stockton)
San Joaquin Delta College will hold an "Information Session" for prospective students interested in Psychiatric Technician careers on Wednesday, June 26, 3 p.m. at Delta’s Tillie Lewis Theatre.
The public is welcome.

With impetus from the new San Joaquin County Prison Hospital, known as the California Health Care Facility, Delta College signed a contract with the state in December 2010 to expand its Psychiatric Technician training program and was awarded $1.3 million. Delta was also awarded $1.5 million from the Department of Labor and Department of Education to train Psychiatric Technicians from October 2011 to September 2014. The college expects to train approximately 270 Psychiatric Technicians. These technicians will have opportunities to work at the new hospital (expected to start operations in July) or fill openings at other hospitals.

Psychiatric Technicians are specialized professionals who help treat those with mental illnesses or developmental disabilities. Students who complete the challenging program can expect to earn up to $60,000 per year. Delta’s program prepares students to practice in the role of a licensed Psychiatric Technician in a variety of health care settings. Graduates will receive a certificate of completion, which prepares them to successfully complete the state licensing examination. On passing the examination, a student will become a licensed Psychiatric Technician in the state of California.

According to the Department of Labor, even in a slow economy, health care jobs continue to be among the fastest growing career fields in the United States.
