Delta Center for the Arts: "The Crucible" opens April 27

San Joaquin Delta College’s Center for the Arts presents Arthur Miller’s dramatization of the Salem Witch Trials in “The Crucible” at Delta’s Tillie Lewis Theatre, April 27 -28, May 4 - 5 at 8:00 p.m., April 29 and May 6 at 2:00 p.m.
Directed by Delta drama instructor Harvey Jordan, The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts from 1692 - 1693. The drama recounts events surrounding the Salem Witch Trials, a series of notorious hearings and prosecutions that led to the execution of 14 women and 6 men accused of witchcraft.
Though written as a work of historical fiction, playwright Miller (who also wrote Death of a Salesman) intended the play to be a thinly veiled criticism of social injustice in modern day America. Miller felt the original production in 1953 was too “stylized and cold.” However, The Crucible went on to win the “Best Play” Tony Award that year. The play eventually became a classic work of American Drama.
Each character in The Crucible plays a vital role in this tragic drama. Some are heroic, some are wretched. All, however, possess very human flaws. Director Harvey Jordan promises to put his ensemble through their paces with a unique and gripping interpretation of The Crucible.
