Delta Center for the Arts L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery presents the San Joaquin Delta College Regional Artists Group Show, June 21 – July 19. The opening reception will be held Thursday, June 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  All events are free and open to the public.

This exhibit features works of art by 5 artists from the San Joaquin Delta College district, curated by Gallery Director Jan Marlese.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Daniel Kasser
Daniel Kasser received his Master of Fine Arts in photography from the University of New Mexico and completed undergraduate studies at Humboldt State University Shasta College in Northern California. He joined the faculty at University of the Pacific in 1985 teaching photography, printmaking and studio art seminars.

Daniel’s photographic style has evolved from West-coast, Northern California modernism, exemplified by Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, toward a pictorial approach that is unique among contemporary landscape photographers interpreting the West. Critics have identified Kasser’s photographs as “constructed realities” and “mythopoetic” interpretations of the Western landscape. In Kasser’s recent works on exhibit, Western Technosites, he surveys and interprets industrialized and post-industrial landscapes. He uses the constructed photograph as a narrative device to render from working landscapes, and the bounty of artifacts of technology buried within them, a symbolic terrain and a new chapter for the story of the mythic West.

Stan Rapada
Stan Rapada is retired from the U.S. Navy, and currently employed by San Joaquin Delta College. He has worked as a freelance photographer for 10 years, primarily as a landscape photographer. He is published in local magazines and on the internet. Stan’s landscape photographs capture dramatic beauty and color. One of his favorite sites to photograph is the majestic landscape of Yosemite National Park.

PAINTINGS

Jill Vasileff
Jill Vasileff was born in Detroit, Michigan and is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Visual Arts Department at University of the Pacific. She received a BFA (painting) from Parsons School of Design, NY, NY and an MFA (painting) from the Milton Avery School of Art, Bard College, Annandale, New York.

Jill states, “I am often looking for material based objects that define and perpetuate an image, invites a painted surface, and uses a level of visual information that comes from something else. My color sensibility is informed by my preoccupation with paint and I often layer color to build depth and luminosity or utilize the local color of an object or material so that it has the presence of paint. Every work must have intimate mark-making and vibrate dimensionally. I am interested in the by-product of the work not being physical in the same way that the essence (or remnants) of our most profound exchanges is not physical.”

PRINTMAKING

Monika Meler
Originally from Brodnica, Poland, Monika Meler earned her B.F. A. from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. She continued her studies at Purdue University, where she earned an M.A., followed with an M.F.A. from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University. While at Tyler, she spent a year studying in Rome, Italy. Monika is an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of the Pacific.

At the age of 10, Monika and her parents immigrated from Poland to the United States. Her work examines her desire for the Poland that no longer exists except in her memory. Monika states that, “These images are printed in many layers on top of one another. Images repeat, change direction, and dominance. All of these actions mimic the actions of memory.”

SCULPTURE

Studio Samba: Samuel Bassett and Pepe Pool
Studio Samba is a collaborative art workshop located in Lodi, California, that provides a studio opportunity for artists who feel they augment each other. Samuel Bassett and Pepe Pool have worked in synchronization for five years on numerous modular sculptural projects. Recent works involve triangles in numbers of possible relationships. The structural stability of the shape permits climbing to heights not easily reached with circles and rectangles. That same stability allows an airiness that suggests an ephemeral structure.

“We love the process of fitting shapes together, exploring spatial relationships, working toward a gratifying sculptural result. Materials are a subsidiary interest – usually concrete in its many variations, but also steel and lacquered wood and any found object that comes to hand”, states Samuel Bassett.

The L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery is a non-profit organization and a premier exhibition space in the city of Stockton. The primary mission of the Gallery is to promote the exhibition of quality and culturally diverse artwork in support of our students’ education and the community at large. The Gallery offers excellent exhibition opportunities to local, regional, and national artists, lenders and guest curators. The Gallery presents artists’ work in all media, with no thematic or geographic restrictions. Student Exhibitions are held at the end of Spring Semester.

The Gallery is located on the ground floor of Shima Center, and is wheelchair accessible. Admission is free and open to the public. Recommended parking is available in the Shima lot for a fee of $1. Tours are welcome and gallery talks may be addressed by contacting gallery director, Jan Marlese, at
