Delta College Center for Microscopy Open House set for April 17
(Stockton)
Interested in a “High Tech” career with numerous employment prospects? Interested in the opportunity to make up to $50k soon after graduation? Then perhaps San Joaquin Delta College’s
Electron Microscopy Program is for you. Find out at Delta’s annual
Center for Microscopy Open House, Tuesday, April 17, 1- 7 p.m.
Microscopy is the study of minute objects using a microscope.
Electron Microscopy is Microscopy in which an electron beam replaces light to form a microscope’s image.
Started in 1970 under the leadership of Delta Instructors Victor Remillard and Dr. Betty Mathews, Delta’s Electron Microscopy Program is one of only two community colleges in the U.S. offering such instruction. The other is in Madison, Wisconsin. Through the dogged fundraising resolve of former Electron Microscopy instructor, Dr. Judy Murphy, Delta’s state-of-the-art
Center for Microscopy and Allied Sciences Building became a reality in 2003.
Delta College offers two certificates:
Electron Microscopy Biological and
Electron Microscopy Crystalline Material. Graduates often work with research scientists in laboratories, manufacturer's application labs, medical research, or sales and marketing. Rewarding careers await!
Yes, the coursework is challenging, however the education that allows students to aspire to advanced research jobs is due in no short measure to Delta’s dedicated staff: Instructors Frank Villalovoz, Dr. Jon Krupp, and Lab Technician Cathy Davis.
Delta College Electron Microscopy Instructor Frank Villalovoz has been with the program from the beginning. Frank graduated from Delta’s very first Electron Microscopy Program Class of 1972…way back when Delta College was still located next to the University of the Pacific.
“We have a special relationship with local industry,” says Villalovoz. “Most businesses consider Delta College a prime training ground for Electron Microscope Technicians. We have many technologically advanced Microscopes…which means we’re great place to learn!”
As with any career, earnings are important. Starting salaries for Electron Microscope technicians with a Delta certificate can range from $50-$55k. After 5 -10 years, you can command up to $70k…or more.
So…interested in a rewarding “High Tech” career? Don’t miss Delta College’s Center for Microscopy Open House, Tuesday, April 17, 1 - 7 p.m.
