Delta College to hold Psychiatric Technician Program
Information Session, Thursday, July 21
(Stockton, CA) San Joaquin Delta College will hold an "information session" for prospective students interested in Psychiatric Technician careers on Thursday, July 21, 2011, 2:30-3:30 p.m. at Delta's South Forum.
The public is welcome.
With impetus from plans to build a new prison hospital in San Joaquin County, Delta College has been promised more than $1.3 million from the state to expand its Psychiatric Technician training program. State officials signed a contract with the College in December, 2010, and expect to train 270 Psychiatric Technicians over the next three years. These technicians will have opportunities to work at the new prison hospital (expected to open in 2013) or fill openings at other hospitals.
Psychiatric Technicians are specialized professionals who help treat those with mental illnesses or developmental disabilities. Students who complete the challenging program can expect to earn up to $60,000 per year. Delta’s program prepares students to practice in the role of a licensed Psychiatric Technician in a variety of health care settings. Graduates will receive a certificate of completion, which prepares them to successfully complete the state licensing examination. On passing the examination, a student will become a licensed Psychiatric Technician in the state of California.
According to the Department of Labor, even in a slow economy, health care jobs continue to be among the fastest growing career fields in the United States.
As one of numerous Delta College vocational offerings, the expanded Psychiatric Technician Program is in keeping with Delta’s mission statement to, “…serve the needs of students, the college district and community through continuing, transfer, and career education.” The program is part of Delta’s Health Sciences Division.
