Delta MESA Students Selected for Prestigious U.C. Davis Research Experience
San Joaquin Delta College’s rigorous MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement) Program prides itself in providing guidance, support and motivation to promising San Joaquin Valley math & science students. MESA’s goal: Support disadvantaged students who will transfer to four-year colleges in pursuit of science, technology, engineering or math careers.
Hard work has its rewards…
Delta College students, Josephine Appeng and Marziyeh Seyed Kazemi, have been selected to take part in the University of California, Davis Winter Undergraduate Research Experience in Biophotonics. Biophotonics is the science of generating and harnessing light (photons) to image, detect and manipulate biological materials in ways that have not been possible before.
A great adventure awaits!
Appeng and Seyed Kazemi are two of only 24 community college students selected statewide to participate in this hands-on research experience. They will take part in two weeks of intensive research training and professional development seminars directed by scientists at the University’s Center for Biophotonics, Science and Technology, based in Sacramento.
“This internship experience is designed to spark a life-long interest in scientific research,” said Cassandra Hernandez-Vives, Delta College’s Interim Coordinator of the Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) Program. “Students will get a tremendous opportunity to advance their understanding of lab science techniques through this program. It’s a real feather in their cap as they seek to transfer to four year universities and pursue a degree in science.”
Appeng and Seyed Kazemi are residents of Stockton and have maintained 4.0 grade point averages while attending Delta College. Appeng is interested in pursuing a degree in health sciences when she transfers next year, while Seyed Kazemi is interested in the field of Biology. Both eventually want to practice medicine.
The U.C. Davis program is funded by grants from the National Science Foundation and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
