Interior Design Club Joins Forces with Habitat for Humanity
(Stockton)
On Saturday, October 15, the San Joaquin Delta College Interior Design Club will join forces with Habitat for Humanity of San Joaquin County at their latest construction site, appropriately named the Dream Creek Homes. The 19-lot subdivision project, which broke ground this past summer, is located in south Stockton near Highway 99 and Arch Airport Road.
“The members of the Interior Design Club chose this undertaking because it is important to them to give back to the community,” explains Carie Loker, the club’s faculty advisor. “This will be an invaluable experience that they will take forward as they embark on their interior design careers.”
John Shores, board president for the Habitat for Humanity of San Joaquin County, welcomes the assistance. “We have had a long, successful relationship with San Joaquin Delta College and the Interior Design Club. In fact, past club members were responsible for suggesting the name of this particular subdivision. We look forward to continuing this relationship far into the future.”
Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor (sweat equity) into building their home as well as the homes of others.
For the Interior Design Club members, this experiences promises to provide an education they are not able to obtain at college. This will be a hands-on, learn-as-you-go life lesson. The members encourage anyone looking to “give back” to consider picking up a hammer and help change a family’s future.
