“Visions in Clay” Exhibition and Awards, Aug. 18 - Sept. 15
Delta College's L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery presents the sixth annual “Visions in Clay” Exhibition and Awards Competition, Aug. 18 - Sept. 15. The opening reception will take place at the Horton Gallery on Thurs., Aug. 18, 5 - 7 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
“Visions in Clay” features 67 ceramic works by 67 artists from around the country, including four from Stockton: Joel Blum, Bruce Cadman, Shiloh Gastello and Bruce Smallwood. Delta College is proud to report that all four local artists are former or current Delta College students. They studied ceramics under Delta art instructor, Joe Mariscal.
“‘Visions in Clay’ is the largest exhibition of ceramic works in the San Joaquin Valley,” says Horton Gallery director, Jan Marlese. “This is an exceptional show in terms of craftsmanship and diversity of exhibited works. ‘Visions in Clay’ was selected as one of the top five ceramic exhibitions in the country by the editor of Ceramics Monthly.”
This year’s ceramic artists and winners were selected by independent juror Judith S. Schwartz, Director of Sculpture in Craft Media at New York University. The exhibition includes functional, decorative and sculptural works, and is dedicated to unique form, surface and texture qualities.
The “Visions in Clay” awards for 2011 go to: Dylan Beck, $1,000 Best of Show for “Yesterday’s Tomorrow”; Merry Arttoones, $650 second place, “Great Steed of Greed”; Lee Middleman, $350 third place for “Sunflower Desert Series.”
The L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery is a non-profit organization and a premier exhibition space in the city of Stockton. The primary mission of the Gallery is to promote the exhibition of quality and culturally diverse artwork in support of our students’ education and the community at large. The Gallery offers excellent exhibition opportunities to local, regional, and national artists, lenders and guest curators. The Gallery presents artists’ work in all media, with no thematic or geographic restrictions. The annual Student Exhibition is held at the end of Spring Semester.
