Photography 2011: Portraiture, Nov. 17 - Dec. 14
Delta Center for the Arts L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery presents the Second Annual Photography Exhibition and Awards Competition - Photography 2011: Portraiture, Nov. 17 – Dec. 14.
Each year the Photography Exhibition presents photographic works in both analogue and digital formats, with a specific focus or theme. This national exhibition features 15 photographers and 30 images exploring portraiture in a variety of styles and social-cultural context.
Generally, portraiture is an artistic representation of a person in which the face and expression is usually the primary focus. The intent is to capture the likeness and personality of the person sitting for a portrait. The works in this exhibition, however, stretch the traditional definition of portraiture to bring viewers deeper into the personality of the person. Subjects are often viewed in full figure; some are viewed with their face obscured. Many of the exhibited photographs are more reflective of figurative works, where styles range from completely realistic figures to abstract works used to tell a story, relay an emotional state or conceptual thought.
The Exhibition Awards go to: Stephen Spiller, “Self-Portrait: I Am Afraid”, $600 Best of Show; Alejandra Regalado, “Aurelia”, $400 2nd Place; and Alec McIntyre, “The Artist Dodges One Sack of Flour”, $300 3rd Place. Congratulations all!
The exhibition juror is Chuck Mobley, Associate Director of Exhibitions, Publications and Programs for San Francisco Camerawork. He has written for: Art on Paper; Contemporary; Camerawork: A Journal of Photographic Arts; and Sculpture magazine. Mr. Mobley has curated (and co-curated) numerous national photographic exhibitions, including: Traces of Life on the Thin Film of Longing; There is Always a Machine Between Us; Katsushig Nakahashi: The Depth of Memory; I feel from Iraq and Afghanistan. He is also a co-founder of Right Window, an artist and curator's project space in San Francisco's Mission District.
2011 "Portraiture" Exhibiting Artists: A. M. Clark, Arthur Fields, Laura Hartford, Alec McIntyre, Julie Michelle, Michael Napper, Irby Pace, Donna Pinckley, Sarah Podles, Alejandra Regalado., Angela Regas, Kate Shannon, Stephan Spiller, Samantha VanDenman and Kurt Weston.
The L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery is a non-profit organization and a premier exhibition space in the city of Stockton. The primary mission of the Gallery is to promote the exhibition of quality and culturally diverse artwork in support of our students’ education and the community at large. The Gallery offers excellent exhibition opportunities to local, regional, and national artists, lenders and guest curators. The Gallery presents artists’ work in all media, with no thematic or geographic restrictions. The annual Student Exhibition is held at the end of Spring Semester.
