A Sort of Homecoming

Delta Center for the Arts L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery, presents the installation work of Tracey Snelling. Tracey is a graduate of San Joaquin Delta College and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts with an emphasis in photography from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. Tracey’s impressive works are displayed both nationally and internationally. Exhibitions include: solo shows in Brussels and Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, the Sundance Film Festival, Kunsthallen Brandt in Denmark, a recent 10-year retrospective at the Rena Bransten Gallery in San Francisco, a traveling show at Frist Museum in Nashville and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem. In addition, Tracey was an artist-in-residence in 2008 at the Galerie Urs Meile in Beijing.
Tracey Snelling's work is an exciting exploration of diverse cultures, influenced by architecture and the urban landscape. Overlooked and neglected buildings become the focus for large and small-scale installation sculptures that present the story behind the building – profiles of the inhabitants that leave subtle clues to be interpreted in many ways. The structures reference both popular culture and history, and are made from various materials, including wood, metal, appropriated images, luminescent wire, small lights, photographic projections and other multimedia. Some contain sound, water, or motors for movement.
Tracey explains, “Driving down the street at night, I look at the lit windows of the houses that I pass and wonder who lives there. What is taking place behind that drawn window shade? A tired motel sign along the side of the highway still buzzes and beckons travelers to come stay in one of the faded rooms. An old furniture store on a street in a forgotten downtown is dark and the sofas are covered with dust. I want to know the stories of the people who once inhabited these areas. Through video, sound, and manipulation of size, I am not trying to replicate a place; rather I give my impression of a place, its people and their experience, and allow the viewer to extrapolate his or her own meaning.”

The L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery is a non-profit organization and premier exhibition space in the city of Stockton. The primary mission of the Gallery is to promote the exhibition of quality and culturally diverse artwork in support of our students’ education and the community at large. The Gallery offers excellent exhibition opportunities to local, regional, and national artists, lenders and guest curators. The Gallery presents artists’ work in all media, with no thematic or geographic restrictions. The annual SJDC Student Art Exhibition & Awards Competition is held at the end of Spring Semester in April and May.
