Delta College Dedicates the Bucky Layland Softball Complex
                                                    Mustangs #1 in State!

Cindy

With family, friends and past players in attendance, former Delta softball coach, Cindy “Bucky” Layland, cut the ribbon to officially dedicate the “Bucky Layland Softball Complex” on Saturday, April 16. Cindy Layland coached at Delta College for 18 years, retiring in 2003 as its all-time winningest softball coach. She is recognized for transforming Delta’s program into a perennial power and contender for the state title.

Before coming to Delta, Layland had a successful career as Pacific’s first softball coach in 1979. In 1983, she coached her Pacific Tigers into the College World Series, where they finished fifth. In 1986, former Delta Athletic Director, Ernie Marcopulos, convinced Cindy Layland to become Delta’s next softball coach. That decision led to one successful team after another; a turning point for Delta’s program. Layland’s teams advanced to the regional playoffs 17 times and finished third in the state in 1988. She was named conference “Coach of the Year” a remarkable 13 times. In addition, Cindy Layland sent numerous players to successful four-year softball programs.

Built with Measure L Bond funds, the state-of-the-art Bucky Layland Softball Complex hosted its first games in the spring of 2009. The complex features a synthetic state-of-the-art FIELDTurf playing surface. The facility features 44-foot dugouts, handicapped seating, 500 bleacher seats, two visitor bullpens, two home bullpens and batting tunnels with pitching machines. Also featured is a powerful watering system which cools the artificial turf on hot days. Delta’s competitors always look forward to playing at this beautiful complex!

After the ceremonial ribbon cutting, Layland threw out the first pitch for the #1 ranked and undefeated Mustangs double-header with arch-rival Sacramento City. Delta swept both games
(5-0, 2-0) behind the phenomenal pitching of Katie Cotta. A fitting end to the day's activities!

The Mustangs eventually finished their regular season with an amazing 37-0 record, 21-0 in conference. They are ranked #1 in the state! On to the playoffs!

Congratulations Cindy “Bucky” Layland and Delta Mustangs softball!
