Delta College Launches Articulation Agreement with Cal Maritime
Known for its variety of academic and trades curricula, San Joaquin Delta College’s new articulation agreement with the California Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) will offer a new potential career path for students starting Fall 2011. Even in tightfisted economies, Cal Maritime grads have excellent career opportunities on land, ports, and at sea. Cal Maritime has job placement rates around 94%, the highest in the California State University (CSU) system. Starting salaries are well above the national average.
Delta College counselor and articulation officer, Jack Saunders, explains, “This articulation agreement provides Delta students with a clear understanding of what is necessary to become eligible for admission to an outstanding campus and program like Cal Maritime. If a student completes the coursework requirements and maintains a high GPA, prospects of being accepted to Cal Maritime are appreciably improved.”
Located on a scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, the California Maritime Academy is a unique and specialized university of the of the 23-campus CSU system. Cal Maritime has been training mariners since 1929, and is one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States. Jack Saunders adds, “Programs at Cal Maritime are designed to develop maturity and leadership skills that translate to all areas of a student’s life.”
Dr. Charles Jennings, Delta College’s Dean of General Education & Transfer, is excited about the developing partnership with Cal Maritime. “The programs at Cal Maritime are certainly among the best, and Delta’s ability to provide access to these programs will serve our students well.” Dr. Jennings emphasizes, “Making transfer course equivalencies clear for Delta students is a great advantage as they pursue degrees leading to successful careers. In addition, articulation agreements provide efficient use of California’s higher education resources.”
With only about 850 cadets, class sizes are small. Students and instructors tend to know each other by name, developing a camaraderie which complements the excellent Cal Maritime education. The Academy offers degrees in, and prepares students for thriving careers in these exciting fields: International Business and Logistics; Global Studies and Maritime Affairs; Marine Engineering Technology; Marine Transportation; Mechanical Engineering; Facilities Engineering Technology.
Cal Maritime is also known for its state-of-the art simulation facility, one of the most advanced in the world. Using two 360-degree projection systems, cadets may take part in bridge operations, radar/navigation system simulations, cargo handling, and multi-threat/hazard crisis management replications.
A key part of the cadet experience is a two-month Pacific training cruise aboard the 500-foot Training Ship Golden Bear. The Golden Bear serves as a floating classroom/lab, where cadets apply technological and leadership skills introduced in the classroom. Students will gain a unique perspective on our increasingly global culture and economy during their Pacific expedition.
The Cal Maritime Academy website stresses, “Our reputation among corporations, industries, agencies, and graduate schools filled with Cal Maritime alumni is that of a school preparing professional, responsible, and successful graduates.”
