Delta College Board Approves “Limited Suspension” of Bond Projects
                                       Seeks to Maximize Taxpayer Investment

San Joaquin Delta College’s Board of Trustees voted to initiate a “Limited Suspension” of new Measure L Bond construction projects at their July 19 meeting. “This suspension will not end any planned Measure L projects, or affect current construction,” says Delta College Superintendent/President, Dr. Jeff Marsee. “However, the temporary hold will allow the college to ‘step back’ and assess new approaches to obtain the maximum return with the remaining Measure L funds.”

The $250 million Measure L Bond, passed in 2004, enables the college to upgrade its infrastructure, renovate and build new facilities. “The ‘limited suspension’ will allow Delta College to insure that taxpayers obtain the most ‘bang for the buck’ with the remaining Measure L funds,” says Marsee. “As the college evaluates how to effectively allocate the remaining funds, we are exploring opportunities for additional state matching funds to supplement planned projects. It’s a ‘win win’ for Delta College and the taxpayer.”

One planned Measure L project is the $13.3 million Shima building renovation, home to Delta’s Caterpillar Technician Program. The ‘limited suspension’ will allow the College some time to review that project, along with others, to see if state matching funds are available in the near future.  State matching funds for such remaining projects could help stretch the value of the college’s remaining bond funds.

Delta College has completed numerous major bond projects over the last three years, including: South Campus at Mountain House, Tracy (July, 2009); The Lawrence & Alma DeRicco Student Services Building (Sept., 2009); Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics (PERA) football, baseball, softball & track venues (2007-10); Irving Goleman Library renovation (Dec., 2010), and the Lee Belarmino Sr. District Data Center (March, 2011). Currently under construction is the Math and Science Center, slated for completion in 2012. The $69 million Math-Science project includes state funding to the tune of
$22 million.

Dr. Marsee adds, “As fiduciary stewards of Measure L Bond funds, insuring the public trust is paramount. Delta College will work vigorously to assure our funds are efficiently spent, benefiting our students, staff and constituent stakeholders.”
