Delta College Co-Sponsors Community Mobilizing Conference, Oct. 9th
San Joaquin Delta College, the Stockton Unified School District and University of the Pacific are
co-sponsoring the Community Mobilization Conference on Saturday, Oct. 9th,
9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at the Raymond Great Hall on the campus of University of the Pacific.
The mission of the conference is to develop safe and healthy communities that lead to educated and successful youth. The Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) is collaborating with the Stockton community, working to improve support for SUSD students. The concern is that our youth are not achieving to their abilities, staying in school, or continuing on to higher education.
Local SUSD high school graduates, community organizers and parents approached the district and a dialog was started. These concerns resulted in the upcoming Community Mobilizing Conference on October 9th. Parents, high school students and community leaders are invited. The goal is to work together to develop safe and healthy communities that lead to educated and successful youth.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Vajra Watson, Director of Research & Policy for Equity at the U.C. Davis, School of Education. Dr. Watson will set the tone for the conference…and raise the pertinent question - What can we do to better support our youth? A panel discussion will follow. The panel will include parents, students, educators and community members who will present input on solutions to better support our youth. The California Rural Legal Assistance (CRLA) and American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) will add expertise on the legal rights and responsibilities of parents and the school district.
A free lunch will be served as participants ask questions of the panel. Following lunch, small breakout groups will continue to discuss the issues and develop plans for future activities that focus on civic and school engagement, and ways to strengthening citywide parental networks. The conference will end with each group summarizing steps we can take together to support our communities, our schools, and our children.
