Homeboy goes to Harvard

Richard Santana presents: Homeboy goes to Harvard
                                                November 4th, Atherton Auditorium

San Joaquin Delta College’s Department of Outreach and Community Relations and SJDC Associated Student Body Government present: HOMEBOY goes to HARVARD, with former Stockton resident, Richard Santana. There will be two presentations on Thursday, Nov. 4th - 11:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. at Delta’s Atherton Auditorium.

Both presentations are free and open to the public.

Homeboy goes to Harvard is one in a series of motivational speakers presented by Delta College that relate to issues and barriers students face when pursuing a college degree.
Richard Santana’s story is truly inspiring…

Santana, once a tough-talking Latino gangster, is now a college-educated, nationally recognized gang prevention speaker. Richard Santana’s journey provides a powerful and graphic illustration of cultural relevance in schools.

Founder of Homeboy Goes to Harvard Productions, Richard shares his story as a third generation gang member who went on to earn a Master’s degree from Harvard University. He demonstrates to students and educators how he accomplished the change that occurred in his life — the change that can occur in anyone's life.

Richard’s moving accounts of gang-life experiences and how they shaped his beliefs, attitudes and self-expectations are inspiring, unsettling and thought-provoking. Richard Santana challenges his audience to critically assess their own perceptions and helps them recognize how these perceptions influence work relationships, effectiveness and productivity.

Mr. Santana’s message is one of making choices: between hope and hopelessness, between evaluating young people based upon our own standards or accepting them in the context of their standards. Should we choose between giving up on our most challenged youth? Or should we truly become their advocates?  These are but a few questions with which Richard Santana challenges his audience.
