Delta College to Host and Play in Inaugural ASBG Bowl, Nov. 20th
Not only will Delta College host the inaugural ASBG (Associated Student Body Government) Bowl this Saturday, Nov. 20th, 1 p.m. at DeRicco Field, but thanks to another great season by the Mustangs with head coach Garry Barlow and staff, they also get to play!
The Mustangs hard fought 21 - 17 victory over Modesto at DeRicco Field on Nov. 13th, ensured a share of the Valley Conference championship with Fresno City. Both teams posted 4-1 conference records. In addition, the Mustangs became “Bowl Eligible.” The bowl selection committee made a natural choice: The Delta Mustangs (7-3) will host the Butte College Roadrunners (8-2) in the first ASBG Bowl. The Mustangs finished the season ranked #6 in Northern California; the Roadrunners bring an 8-2 record with a #5 ranking.
It promises to be a hard fought game, with Delta out for revenge after recent losses to Butte. The Mustangs last defeated Butte in 2004, 42-33, at the Tri-Counties Holiday Bowl. “We feel if you're in a bowl game, you want play against a team ranked higher than you," Coach Barlow said. "You want to have to work for a victory."
Adding to the drama, Butte is coached by Jeff Jordan, a Lincoln High and Delta College product who played with Coach Barlow under Jeff’s father, long-time Delta football coach, Jack Jordan.
Delta College ASBG President, Patrice Burke, says Delta’s Associated Student Body Government chose to co-sponsor a bowl game to, “Show off our athletic program and present what Delta has to offer the community.” The ASBG is expected to pledge $4,000 toward this year’s event. “This will be the first bowl game that San Joaquin Delta College has sponsored,” adds Burke. “Most bowls are hosted by outside businesses. This is the first bowl game sponsored by a student organization. The ASBG Bowl provides a great opportunity to promote our great college and its programs!”
General admission for this year’s ASBG Bowl is $8; $5 for students & seniors. The ASBG would like to remind Delta Students that the first 100 student attendees will get a free ticket and T-shirt. Just go to the ASBG tent and show your Delta student ID or copy of your current Class schedule.
It promises to be a great game! GO MUSTANGS!
