Yuji Hiratsuka - Printmaking
(Stockton)
The LH Horton Jr Gallery is pleased to present the paintings of Sariah Ha and printmaking works of Yuji Hiratsuka. Both artists have a unique approach to presenting the human form—in style, technique and the variety of emotions these figures present through the formal qualities of their art.
Sariah Ha received her BFA in Drawing and Painting from California State University Fullerton. Born in America of Korean ancestry, key to her work is the use of Asian American figures to express her identity and cultural struggles. Each painting depicts an emotion through the use of expressive line, color and form. The figures are abstract and organic, blending in with the negative space, and tell stories that reflect the human condition.
Yuji Hiratsuka received his MFA in Printmaking from Indiana University, an MA in Printmaking from New Mexico State University, and a BS in Art Education from Tokyo Gakugei University. He is currently a Professor of Art at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. His work is created by using a personal technique of Chine Collé with traditional and innovative etching methods, and printed on a thin Japanese washi paper known as Owara mulberry paper. The enigmatic figures reflect the sense of such human conditions as wry, satire, whimsy, irony, paradox or mismatch that happens often in people’s daily lives.
The LH Horton Gallery is located on the campus of San Joaquin Delta College, on the ground floor of Shima Center, and is wheelchair accessible. Admission is free and open to the public. Recommended parking is available in the Shima lot for a nominal fee of $1. Tours are welcome, and Gallery Talks and special needs may be addressed by contacting the Gallery Director, Jan Marlese at:
