Delta Forensics takes 14th at Nationals in New Orleans, brings home 4 Golds!

Students from both Delta campuses have been in New Orleans this past week competing for national glory at the Phi Rho Pi national tournament held April 5th-11th.  The team brought home several medals including three bronze medals and four gold medals, amounting to a 14th place finish among all community colleges nationally.

The team received 70 sweepstakes points, showing the substantial improvement Delta students have made in their competition this year.  Director of Forensics Steven Graham said, "It is great to see the hard work and dedication of our students rewarded on the national stage.  I'm very proud of the hard work of our coaches and students in addition to the great support we get from our administration and staff."

The Mustangs are also a well-rounded team winning gold medals in Interpretation, Public Address, Debate, and Limited Prep events.  Coaches from all over the country commented this weekend on how much progress the team has made, and are excited about our future. Thanks to the campus for the support, especially from the administration, our department and division."

Moorpark College won the tournament with over 200 sweepstakes points, while other Southern California schools topped out the list of the top five.  Delta college debated Moorpark College's top team, both of whom were in the top three speakers in the tournament, for the gold medal in which we defeated them on a 2-1 decision.

Assistant Coach Terry Peterson also commented, "I am very impressed with the outstanding results from the national championship tournament.  Our students are extremely talented speakers and they have combined their extraordinary talent with hard work and dedication to accomplish national recognition in forensics competition at the highest level.  They have proven that Delta college students can compete with the best in the nation."

Want to be part of the action?  There are two events left to get involved with the team this year!  Come to the Atherton theater on April 22rd at for Earth Day.  The debate team is having a public debate on making Delta College more sustainable at 1:30pm.  Also there is one final tournament of the season, May 1st at Ohlone College.  This tournament, the "Spring Fling" is the perfect opportunity to get your feet wet in forensics as it features all novice competition in a one-day format.
