A STORY OF DESIGN
Delta College’s Fashion and Interior Design Programs to host a
Design Extravaganza on Friday, May 7th!
(Stockton, CA)
A Story of Design, 3rd Edition, is the theme for San Joaquin Delta College’s Fashion and Interiors Programs extravaganza taking place on Friday, May 7th, on the campus of Delta College. The event is free and open to the public.
The evening is a two-part event, showcasing the talent in the Fashion and Interior Design Programs, featuring live-action competitions and a fashion show under the stars.
Part I:
The two-part event will begin with The Fashion and Interior Design Exhibit. This is an annual showcase of student work in the Fashion and Interior Design Programs, in the areas of Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising, Trend Forecasting, Clothing and Culture, Visual Merchandising, Fashion Illustration and Interior Design. The student participants will be displaying their talents and creativity to specific work showing the projects they created in classes that specialize in areas such as fashion design, accessory design, fashion illustration, fashion advertising, cultural and ethnic costume, visual merchandising and interior design.
The exhibit will be open from 8 am to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2010 in Danner Hall on the Delta College Campus.
From 4:00-6:00 p.m. in Danner Hall, the LIVE design competitions will begin. Along with the exhibit, the students will be competing in several LIVE competitions where guests will be the judges in deciding the winners of the competitions. A favorite from years past was the White T-shirt Competition, which involves re-designing a white tee shirt into anything from a bikini or handbag to a fashionable garment. Other competitions include a live visual merchandising contest, where student create a window display with random “secret” props and mannequins. They must create the window around a central theme using mystery materials.
The garment redesign competition is another favorite. Design students are asked to take a garment, which has been purchased at a second-hand store, and, using mystery fabrics and materials, transform the garment into a new creation.
Immediately following the competitions, the public will be able to vote on all of these competitions and pick their favorites from the original designs.
Part II:
The second part of the story is the Designer’s Collection Show, which will take place at
7 p.m. following the public judging. This exciting show will feature six student designers whose collections will be shown in a live fashion show. Dressing 30 models, professionally made up and styled, the designers have been challenged to present the best of their creative design ideas.
Each designer has created their collection from various inspirations in life: from nature to love, and humanity to hair. There are four returning designers, Alesha Petit, Ceazar James Cabreros, Emily Wright and James Kubota. Along with featuring new work from previous participants, the Fashion Program introduces new comers Shontell Upton and Christian Herr.
Prior to the show, the collections will be judged by professionals in the industry, as well as fashion leaders that hail from Stockton, San Francisco and Sacramento. The judges will be hosted to an elegant dinner and will have the opportunity to see each collection first hand and have discussions with each designer, to have a full understanding of their work. Besides putting on a fabulous show, the designers will be competing for a cash scholarship.
Guests will be treated to music provided by DJ Tunes. The head photographer for the evening will include Stan Rapada. Food will be provided by Delta College’s Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry Program, as well as Tammie Webb with her Delectable Cake Balls and Starbuck’s Coffee.
This fabulous event has been put together over a course of four months by the Fashion Program’s Event Production class. They have recruited models, makeup artists, hair stylists, music, photographers, refreshments and donations while collaborating for the overall idea, choreography, presentation and marketing. The public will have a rare opportunity to enjoy the creativity and talent of the local, upcoming generation of designers and producers during this Story of Design presentation.
The event is free and open to the public. “We want to be able to expose the student work to as many people as possible and to allow the public an opportunity to experience a really cool fashion event right here in Stockton,” said Leslie Asfour, director for Delta's Fashion and Interior Design Programs. According to Camille Wall, who is part of the Event Production class that is putting on these events, “It’s a great opportunity to expose to the community what talent we have in Stockton.”
Events Production Class student Rochelle Lazono said, “You’re not really going to find a program like ours anywhere else. Our program’s really unique and most people don’t even know about it”
To pay for the cost of the show, the Event Production Class is hosting the Fashion Club’s semiannual Nearly New Sale on Friday, April 9th. All of the funds raised will pay for food, decorations, marketing and the competition winner’s cash scholarships. “We are also raffling off some amazing donations,” said Asfour. Some of the raffle packages include dinner at Papapavlo’s and a water-view room from the Lexington Plaza Hotel, Dinner for two at Maria Maria La Cantina (a restaurant collaboration with music legend Carlos Santana and DSE Corp.), spa packages and products, i-pods and more. Tickets for the raffle are only $1 and will be for sale at the event on May 7th and up to that date through the Fashion and Interior Design Programs.
Support for the Fashion Program from the fashion industry has been amazing. Just a few of the supporters include Uduak Oduok - CEO of Ladybrille Media Group, Azadeh Riah - CEO of Azadeh Couture, Michael Palladino - LIM College, Billy Ola Hutchinson - Stationer and Manager at GUMP’S and Lisa Starkey of PDC Boutique. Local and regional supporters include the Lexington Plaza Hotel, Papapavlo’s, DSE Corp., SJDC Bookstore, PDC Boutique, Pret, City Girl, Flair Boutique, With Garden Flair, Weston Wear, TSD, Salon Da-V, Peltier Station Winery, and so many more.
