New Delta College Security Camera System Ready to Fight Crime
(Stockton, CA)
“This project is an excellent demonstration of the value Delta College places on maintaining a secure and safe environment,” states Sergeant Geff Greenwood of the San Joaquin Delta College Police Department. Sergeant Greenwood is commenting on the successful installation of the college’s new state-of-the-art video surveillance system. This project is one of many funded by the Measure L Municipal Bond passed by district voters.
Three years ago, Delta started a pilot project to determine the feasibility of reducing crime on campus with a security camera system. Delta’s Computer Services placed cameras in campus parking lots. One year later, auto burglaries were reduced by 64%.
This impressive reduction should come as “no surprise” says Greenwood. “The huge success of our pilot project showed security camera technology has proven benefits. Cameras have already been used to catch crimes in progress and to aid in successful prosecution.
The indisputable success of the pilot project allowed Delta’s Board of Trustees to fund development of a large-scale plan. Some of these cameras will eventually be installed at Delta’s new Mountain House campus.
The scope of the project was ambitious. In addition to adding more cameras and technical infrastructure to Delta’s system, the plan consolidated all stand-alone monitoring systems (such as the Bookstore and Child Development Center) under one central location.
The system currently includes 63 advanced cameras with zoom, pan and tilt capabilities. New cameras were installed in parking lots and various interior locations. Two servers manage four storage arrays, consisting of approximately 24 terabytes. The system is scalable, allowing additional cameras and storage as needed.
“This is one of the most advanced systems of its kind,” says Officer Greenwood. “Video is recorded from each camera 24/7 onto our digital storage array. This allows for more efficient camera review and quicker response time. Video clips and photos can be sent to officers in the field for review while en route to calls. Video will be stored for one month.”
The Honeywell Digital Video Management software allows advanced motion sensor capabilities, alerting police when activity occurs in potential areas of concern. “This is especially useful for things like preventing car theft and vandalism at construction sites,” adds Greenwood.
Officer Greenwood says there is no absolute defense against crime. “A good defense involves taking precautionary measures to avoid the risks around you.” Greenwood finishes, “One thing is certain; Delta’s students, staff and visitors will walk the campus with a higher degree of security.”
