Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Concert at Atherton Auditorium
(Stockton)
The Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Concert will be presented by San Joaquin Delta College on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 8p.m. in Atherton Auditorium. Reserve seating is $30 or $25, depending on the seat location.
More than anything else, Poncho Sanchez is a storyteller. As leader of the most popular Latin jazz group in the world today, jazz aficionados say it’s his congas and seasoned ensemble that do the talking.
Poncho Sanchez grew up in the Los Angeles area, where he was weaned on a broad range of Latin and non-Latin popular music. Among the artists who have had a special role in shaping his growth as a musician are Tower of Power, South African Hugh Masekela, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, saxophonist Eddie Harris, Latin jazz patriarch Tito Puente, conga titian Mongo Santamaria, and the late Ray Charles.
Inspired by the conga playing of Cuban great Mongo Santamaria, Poncho Sanchez honed his skills as a percussionist and broke into the limelight in 1975 at the age of 23. He joined vibraphonist Cal Tjader’s famed Latin jazz ensemble. Poncho performed with Cal Tjader until Tjader’s untimely death in 1982. A year later, he began his unprecedented 23-year relationship with Concord Records. Poncho has produced two dozen recordings, a GRAMMY Award and several GRAMMY nominations.
Tickets are available at the Delta Center for the Arts Box Office. The box office is open Tuesday-Friday, 11am-6pm, Saturday, 11am-3pm, and 2 hours before performances. You may also purchase tickets on-line at: www.deltacollege.edu/div/finearts/dept/dca/boxoffice.html.
