LH Horton Jr. Gallery presents: Horizons & Landscapes, by artists Barbara Crawford and Paul Ferney, Nov. 13 - Dec. 17
(Stockton)
The LH Horton Jr. Gallery is pleased to present the landscape paintings of Barbara Crawford and Paul Ferney, Nov. 13 thru Dec. 17. A reception for the show will be held Nov. 13, 5 - 7 p.m. Landscape painting in Europe and the United States became most prominent during the 19th century, and remains a popular genre today. Landscape painters work in a wide range of styles, from the very painterly, Plein Air style of the Impressionists, to the romantic realism of the Barbizon painters, and the epic landscapes of the Hudson River School in the United States. Landscape paintings encompass skyscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, and moonscapes, titled for their specific focus. This exhibition beautifully contrasts the luminous, mood-filled skyscapes of Barbara Crawford, with the colorful, impasto painted landscapes of Paul Ferney.
About the Artists
Paul Ferney was raised in Logan, Utah. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Utah State University where he studied under Glen Edwards. Paul continued his art education in Salt Lake City, taking workshops with Camille Corey and at King's Cottage. The majority of Paul's paintings during this time were inspired by the mountains and valleys of Northern Utah.
In 2004 Paul moved to San Francisco where he currently resides. Paul is a part of the Belcher Art Studio community, where he keeps a studio. In 2005 he became involved in the Plein Air painting community and has participated in the Sonoma Plein Air Festival, and the Copia Art Festival in Napa. Paul’s paintings are inspired by the beautiful local wine country, as well as the vibrant cityscapes of San Francisco. “I love that feeling when you know you’re seeing something amazing,” Paul reflects. “Painting is a way for me to share these moments of beauty.”
Early on, the landscape paintings by Barbara Crawford included minimal landmasses, with the low horizon line sinking lower. Her most recent works have eliminated all reference to land. The sky stops and the land mass is missing.
“It is not just a painting of all sky,” Barbara states. “There is a void, an emptiness where the earth was. Historically all landscape paintings, in one way or another, refer, by nature, to a time or place. These works, by refusing to identify a place, by refusing to locate themselves, become universal.”
“Important in the process,” Barbara emphasizes, “is the contrast between very thin and thick paint applications. The materiality of the paint gives meaning to the elusive nature of the moment. Like the clouds themselves, or a particular atmospheric effect, the unique moment of elements, is never to be repeated again.”
Barbara Crawford received her MA from James Madison University and an MFA from Vermont College. Barbara is Professor of Art History and Studio Art at Southern Virginia University.
