San Joaquin Delta College hosts “disABILITY AWARENESS EVENT” (d.A.E.)

(Stockton, CA)

San Joaquin Delta College Disability Support Programs and Services (DSPS) will be hosting a disAbility Awareness Event (d.A.E.) on, Wednesday, October 1, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Danner Hall - Upper level.

“The event focuses on interactive and experiential activities,” shares Karen Andersen, Director of DSPS for Delta College.  “We want everyone to get a sense of how various disabilities can affect people at school, home, or work – a chance to expand awareness by engaging different senses.  You will also see various technologies that students use to access academic tasks in non-traditional ways.”

d.A.E. is an opportunity to see and experience the latest adaptive equipment and computer software programs. Attendees can discuss uses, availability, and price with product vendors.  The vendors will share solutions to assist parents and educators with vision, hearing, speech and other learning disabilities.

Tables with displays and activities intended to simulate functional limitations experienced by people with various disabilities is a chief goal of the disAbility Awareness Event. These activities always provide insightful experiences for attendees.

Also on-hand will be community agencies with information about services available in Stockton.

The following organizations will be attending:

*California Telephone Access *Mayor’s Task Force *A & E Low Vision Products *Department of Rehabilitation *Goodwill l Workability III *DRAIL

*United Cerebral Palsy *Nor-Cal Center on Deafness *Specialty Services

*Sterling Adaptive *State Council for Developmental Disabilities

*Access Ingenuity *Read Again *Delta’s Assistive Technology

This event is free and open to the public.  For additional information about this event, please contact Sharon Allen, San Joaquin Delta College DSPS, at 209-954-5349.
