DELTA COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES EXTEND THE CONTRACT OF SUPERINTENDENT/PRESIDENT DR. RAUL RODRIGUEZ

(Stockton)

The San Joaquin Delta College Board of Trustees voted at Tuesday night’s meeting (2/19) to extend the contract of Superintendent/President, Dr. Raul Rodriguez thru June 30, 2012.

Dr. Rodriguez became the 8th Superintendent/President of San Joaquin Delta College in August of 2002. He has an extensive history as a community college president, administrator and educator. He obtained a Ph.D. in Psychology in 1987 from University of California, Santa Cruz; a Master of Arts in School and Applied Psychology in 1982 from Fairfield University, Connecticut, and a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from Bowling Green State University, Ohio in 1977.

With his latest contract extension, Dr Rodriguez will continue to lead the College during a pivotal time in its history.  San Joaquin Delta College is currently in the midst of a $250 Million expansion and renewal program funded by the passage of Measure L, a municipal bond passed by the voters of the College’s district in 2004.

Dr. Rodriguez is enthusiastically moving San Joaquin Delta College into the future, spearheading Measure L Bond projects. These projects include a new campus at Mountain House, and proposed centers in Lodi and Manteca. Under Dr. Rodriguez leadership, numerous upgrades to the Stockton campus have been completed or are underway. One example is the new Cecchetti Baseball Field. Future projects include a new state of the art science building and “Gateway Building” which will bring all student support services under one central location.

Dr. Rodriguez is excited about how the new Mountain House campus and Stockton campus enhancements will benefit students, faculty and staff into the future.

Under Dr. Rodriguez leadership, the college has been instrumental in efforts to obtain Title V and TRIO grants. These Federal grants increase the retention and success rates of degree-seeking, low-income, Hispanic and or first generation college students. Students are supported by tutoring, academic, career and personal counseling as well as a mentoring program.

The Passport to College program is another innovative project initiated by Dr. Rodriguez and the Delta College Foundation.  Passport to College offers 2 years of free tuition to Delta for every 5th grader in the college’s district on completion of a HS degree or equivalent. “We want to ensure that students stay in school and eventually go to college,” says Rodriguez.  Modesto Jr. College has taken Delta’s lead and signed on to its own program.

“There are some very exciting things happening at Delta. These programs will benefit our students and the community for years to come. I’m proud I will continue to be a part of it,” adds Rodriguez. “The Pride of San Joaquin Delta College is our students. As students approach new academic and career challenges, we at Delta College will help make their dreams a reality. We are their partners toward that end.”
