Delta College Caterpillar Training Program receives an honorable mention in the California Community Colleges “Exemplary Program Awards.”
San Joaquin Delta College’s Caterpillar Dealer Service Technician Program was recognized with an honorable mention by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors during its annual Exemplary Program Awards. Established in 1991, these awards honor California Community Colleges for exceptional programs in career and technical education.
Delta’s Caterpillar Dealer Service Technician Program is a joint venture between Caterpillar Inc., California Caterpillar Dealers Foundation, and San Joaquin Delta College. The program involves six Caterpillar dealerships from across the state that joined together to recruit, select and sponsor students entering Delta’s Caterpillar program. This partnership has forged a unique approach to educating students by combining an eight-week classroom environment with a paid hands-on internship at a Caterpillar dealership.
The theme for this year’s awards was “Innovative Bridges in Career Technical Education.” California Community Colleges Chancellor Diane Woodruff says, “This year’s awards represent programs that meet a vital community need in career technical education, have high student success rates, and can be modeled in other community colleges.”
The Exemplary Program Awards emphasize the vital and critical role played by California’s 109 community colleges in meeting the state’s workforce needs.
“This is the 6th year of our program,” says Delta College Caterpillar program instructor Ken Pekarek. “We continue to receive great support from our Caterpillar dealerships. That’s what makes our program so successful. In addition, the program instructors have a fantastic working and teaching relationship.”
Dan Carter, Rich Dettloff and Larry Paulsen are the other dedicated instructors for Delta’s Caterpillar Dealer Service Technician Program.
