THE DELTA COLLEGE JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESENTS “AN EVENING WITH THE YELLOWJACKETS.”

The Delta College Music Department presents “An Evening with the Yellowjackets” jazz concert on Saturday, December 1st, 8pm at Atherton Auditorium.
The Yellowjackets concert is the culmination of the Delta College Music Department’s Jazz Festival on Saturday, December 1st. The Jazz Festival is an all-day event, featuring jazz bands from the valley’s middle schools, high schools, and colleges. This annual event brings together the best local jazz bands and gifted young musicians.
The Yellowjackets, featuring Russell Ferrante-keyboards, Jimmy Haslip-bass, Bob Minzer-tenor sax, Marcus Baylor-drums, have been cutting edge purveyors of innovative, eclectic jazz for 25 years. In 2006, they released their 23rd CD, Twenty-Five, celebrating the Jackets 25th year. Twenty-Five features classic tunes that make “The Jackets” jazz fusion’s quintessential group. The Yellowjackets push the boundaries of jazz with an intense, distinctive sound incorporating elements of bebop, funk, R&B, and rock.
Other recordings include: Yellowjackets (their debut, in 1981), Mirage A Trois, Samurai Samba, Greenhouse, Blue Hats, Priceless Jazz, Time Squared, and Altered State.
The group came upon its name during their first demo session. Looking at a sheet full of possible names, Yellowjackets was the one that popped out. The group says, “It seemed to connote something lively, energetic, something with a ‘sting.’ That’s about as deep as it went. Once you choose a name, you’re stuck with it. So here we are, 16 years later, grown men playing in a band named ‘Yellowjackets.’”
